About the Garden
A growing community dedicated to nature, education, and sustainable living in Skerries.
Our Story
Skerries Mills Community Garden was founded in 2020 by a group of local residents who shared a vision for a green, collaborative space in the heart of our town.
The raised beds of the garden had been filled with soil and left for a few months and were growing a head high collection of the most luxuriant weeds ever seen. The task looked daunting but right from the start it was part of our ethos not to use any sprays or herbicides. We didn’t and still never have. It’s quite surprising what a group of willing people can do when armed with a garden fork, and soon the beds were ready for an initial planting.
Some of our members were particularly interested in wild bee conservation, and thus the garden was planted almost exclusively with pollinator friendly flowers. A garden for both people and nature.
We meet most Sundays through the growing season and anyone is welcome to come along, whether to help out or simply sit and enjoy. The garden is also open to all from 9am to 5pm seven days a week.
In 2022 we were honoured when the National Biodiversity Data Centre and All Ireland Pollinator Plan chose our garden in which to host their first ever Wild Bee festival. We continue to run the festival every year and also a Scarecrow Festival around Halloween time and various other events, training sessions and workshops through the summer.
We believe that connecting with nature is essential for well-being. Our garden provides a safe, welcoming environment for people of all ages and backgrounds to learn, grow, and relax together.
